Our Day Out! - Padley Gorge to Castleton

Saturday 12th July - the day was cloudy and chilly for July, but undaunted our small band of walkers set off (almost on time) in our splendid minibus to the Longshaw estate in Derbyshire.

After a warming cup of tea and cake we split into two parties. One explored the Longshaw estate, and the other walked the one and half miles down the lovely Padley Gorge to Padley Chapel.

Padley Chapel is all that remains of a large manor of a large house dating back to the 14th century.

Both parties met up at the chapel, where we ate our picnic and celebrated Shirley's birthday.  As you can tell this was no ordinary picnic!

We then walked/drove to Surprise.  The views were fantastic, the sun was shining and we had a lovely time even though the path was not exactly wheel chair friendly.

This was the beautiful view at Surprise.
Next, on to Hathersage.

There was a distinctly 'sci-fi' feel to the village.  We had close encounters with several aliens, including this wonderful Clanger.

The traditional well dressings were beautiful...

as was St Michael's Church.

Then, of course, we viewed Little John's Grave.

Our final destination was Castleton.  After a refreshing cup of tea and cake, we went for a stroll around.

All too soon it was time to board the minibus and head home with just a small break for yet another excellent meal.

Many thanks go to Shirley and Peter for organising such a wonderful day out.
