How to pray - regular prayer

[Prayer index]  [Spirituality]  [Prayers for individuals]

[How to pray - introduction]

It is good to get into a regular pattern of prayer - at a regular time if possible.

You might like to follow a daily service said on your own which will have space for bible reading and prayers.

Or you could read a passage from the bible, perhaps with reading notes, and say prayer at the same time.

A pattern for prayer:

1) Give praise to God - not just for all the blessings you have received, but just because God is God.

- use the words of the psalms if you like, or focus on a particular aspect of God - beauty, generosity, tenderness, passion, distance, power, love, creativity, and so on to eternity ...

2) Acknowledge before God your failings and weakness - and ask and accept God's forgiveness.

3) Pray for the needs of the world

- for reconciliation and justice and hope in the face of violence and greed and selfishness.

- for the church and for its faithful service of Christ in a fractured and too sinful world.

4) Pray for individuals who are ill, in trouble, suffering; pray for those who are dying.

- use your own words; or just imagine the person and, in your mind's eye, hold them up before God for God's blessing.  There are some prayers on this site you may use if you wish.

- pray for yourself as well

5) Then stop speaking and, in silence, simply wait on God.

6) Finish by giving thanks to God for everything he has done.

You might like to divide up these aspects of prayer according to the time of day, for example:

Morning:   Praise, prayer for the day, prayer for individuals, silence, thanks.

Evening:    Confession, thanks, prayer for the needs of the world, silence.

And then conclude your prayer with the Lord's prayer or the grace:

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,

and the love of God,

and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit

be with us all, evermore.  Amen.
