[Historical Plan of Ordsall Churchyard]

Ordsall Churchyard is extensive.  It probably was started at the same time as the Church was first built - around the year 1250.

There are just a few headstones surviving from the eighteenth century, and a larger number from the nineteenth century.  This may be partly because some older headstones were re-used as flooring material in the refurbishment of Ordsall Church in 1877.

The churchyard that then existed (an area immediately surrounding the church) was closed in 1876.  However during the twentieth century a much larger area has been added making the churchyard now one of the biggest in the Diocese.  See an historical plan.

There are a number of iron crosses in the churchyard in place of headstones.  They were made by a local iron founder, Bradshaws.  Pictures and further information may be found here.

Now the churchyard is almost full and decisions have to be made about its longer term future.

Ordsall Churchyard Wildlife Group was set up in May 1996.

On a voluntary basis its members help with the maintenance of the older part of the churchyard - and to enhance it with a programme of planting.
