St Albans Church

[St Albans centenary]  [History of St Albans]

St Albans was 100 years old on St Albans Day, June 22nd 2003, and we celebrated its centenary that weekend.

Autumn 2003 saw the sad closure of St Albans.  With the closure of St Albans Church, its activities also come to an end.  It important to record that the choir and music at St Albans maintained its high standard and the small but enthusiastic Sunday Club continued to meet whilst the church was open.

The Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham put the church and hall up for sale.

In 2004 a prospective buyer was refused planning permission to convert the building for residential use.

Earlier this year another prospective purchaser had been found and they were at the point of submitting a planning application.

During the closure the church had endured vandalism and theft.

Then on 7th August 2008 came the shocking news that St Albans Church was on fire.  Residents from the neighbouring Hollies residential home were evacuated to temporary accommodation and no one was hurt in the fire.

The Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham, the Rt Rev George Cassidy, said:

"Although St Albans was no longer used for worship, the church had a special place in the hearts of local people, as for 100 years it was where they gathered for worship, baptisms, weddings and funerals.  And so we hold those people in our thoughts and prayers"
