All Hallows Church Ordsall Summary Description
The Church was begun around 1250 though the extensive re-ordering in 1877 means that in substance what you see when you look at the Church is largely Victorian.. Porch The path from Church Lane comes to the south porch which was part of the 1877 re-ordering of the church. It has two stained small glass windows given by the pupils of Thrumpton School, the first of which was placed in the porch in July 1958. Within the building its atmosphere is simple and friendly, though perhaps a little dark as every window has stained glass. Font As you enter the church you meet the font which was put in as part of the 1877 refurbishment. (An older, octagonal, font stands now by the organ.) Memorials Inside the door the south wall holds several memorial plaques. Tower The base of the tower probably dates back to around 1300, with upper stages being built over the next 100 years. Screen The screen is dated about 1430-1450. The tracery and fan vaulting are in relatively good condition, though it has been much restored and moved around. At some unknown date it was removed from the front to the entrance to the tower. In 1877 it returned to its place between the choir and the nave, but one person objected so strongly, claiming that it blocked a view of the east window, that he offered £100 for it to be removed. His money was accepted and the screen moved back to the west wall. It was moved back to its present position in the 1930s. Windows All the stained glass was put into the church between the 1877 restoration and 1936. Most were made by Blackfriars, though one window (on the north side of the chancel) was made by Charles Kempe. Organ The organ was built by Brindley and Foster of Suffolk Road, Sheffield and installed in 1877. In business from 1854-1939 they were a significant exporter and claimed to have made organs for "every civilised country in the world." The organ was last thoroughly cleaned and overhauled in 1987 and is now due another.
