Ordsall Parochial Church Council Annual Report 2007-2008 ELECTORAL ROLLThe Electoral Roll was totally revised in March 2007. A total of 104 electors were recorded on the Roll. An additional 8 electors have been added this year and 1 person has left giving a revised total of 111. Tony Weeds, Electoral Roll Secretary PCC SECRETARY’S REPORTThe past year has again been a busy one for the PCC and its’ sub groups with a full agenda of issues to deal with. The full PCC has met eight times since the last General Meeting and attendance at these meetings has averaged 70% of membership. The sub groups have been effective in dealing with their own areas of responsibility and communication between the groups and with the full PCC has worked well. The provision of new porch gates was completed during the year but there are a number of items of business that will require PCC attention in the forthcoming months. These include repairs to the lych gate and church roof, new carpets and chairs in the church and replacement of the heating boiler. Other issues under consideration are the future use of the allotment area and the church hall. There have been no changes to PCC membership during the course of the year. Brian Harvey, PCC Secretary HEALTH and SAFETYFollowing new fire regulations which came into force in October 2006 the opportunity was taken to have a full Fire and Health & Safety risk assessment of the church undertaken. This was done in February by a qualified risk assessor, and as a result a formal Health & Safety Policy (a copy is exhibited on the Church notice board) was drawn up with the help and advice of our insurance company. The policy covers both the internal and external areas of the church. To ensure that we regularly undertake the checks that we are required to make, a task list record has been prepared and the appropriate checks are now being made. It is important that the checks are made as failure to do so may nullify the terms of our insurance policy. If you see anything that you see as a safety hazard please let me know so that I can take the appropriate action. Remember, that in all matters of safety, we are not only responsible for our own safety but also that of others. So please be vigilant at all times, somewhere there is an accident waiting to happen. John Plumtree, Health & Safety Officer EVENTS COMMITTEEThe main event for this year was our Summer Garden Party, held in Mr and Mrs Faulkner’s beautiful garden. You might well remember the occasion – it was the weekend that the rains came! We have had bad weather before, but perhaps nothing quite like the weather we had that day. The memory of Bob the Magician fire eating in torrential rain while lightening flashed and the thunder rolled and the crowds sheltered inside the tents and gazebos will stay with us for a long, long time. As will the sight of the Ordsall School choir singing on, soaked to the skin despite the umbrellas held aloft by a few brave souls. The scouts and their leaders bravely turned out in the worst of the afternoon’s weather to help cart the chairs and tables, gazebos and tents back down to the parish hall. Where the canvas stayed, drip drying, for many days until it could finally be packed away. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, the events committee is unable to hold a summer fair this year. However, a programme of alternative events throughout the year is planned, including more Village Venture productions, table top sales and parish outings. The future of the Events committee is in question. We have only 4 active members and currently rely on the Parish hall for much of the work that we do. Without more helpers and an adequate venue for events and for storage it seems unlikely that the traditional programme of activities within the parish that we have previously enjoyed will be able to continue. Helen Richards PARISH MAGAZINEAt the end of the 2007 calendar year I gave up the editorial role, together with Shirley, but continue in the role of seeking and managing advertising. Tony Kerswill took over as Editor in January 2008. The number of adverts in the magazine could be increased, particularly from town businesses that sell their services to Ordsall residents. Assistance in this aspect of the magazine would be appreciated. The number of copies sold each month of some 330 has been maintained. Financially the magazine continues to make a modest profit for church funds. The number of distributors stays the same but could be increased if there were some more people willing to deliver a few monthly. The prospect of new housing on the Bridon Wire site calls for outreach from the church that, on one level, can be achieved through the magazine. Peter Thomas, Editor FAMILY CAREThank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our Christmas Toys campaign. We personally took a fully laden car across to the collection point in Nottingham. Once again your donations of presents make a difference to local children and young people. The aim of the project is to provide vulnerable children and young people throughout the Diocese with toys and gifts at Christmas time, which they might not otherwise receive.
Family Care continue to offer advice and support in a range of situations including:
Family Care is an approved voluntary agency, which is well established and has for many years provided a full range of adoption services. Their staff include six adoption social work staff who bring a breadth of skills and experience to the services on offer. Our work includes the recruitment, preparation, assessment and approval of adoptive parents, who wish to adopt a child/children from this country. They also offer counseling services for birth families and also for those who would like to contact birth families As an agency Family Care continue to provide Child Protection training for all that work with children within the Diocese. They also act in an advisory role to the Diocese when a child protection issue is being investigated and continue to offer help and support to individuals and churches that are affected. Hazel Newstead www.familycare-nottingham.org.uk. THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETYDuring October I opened the boxes from 15 members and banked £323.94. I am most grateful for the support and pleased many gift aided their giving. Our Christingle, held on Sunday 3 February, received many favourable comments but we were disappointed only three children came. Invitations given out at the Crib Service and letters sent to the uniformed organisations and our Saturday Club children and parents did not yield any response. We need to question was the date too late after the Christmas festival? The date was chosen because of many services before Christmas. We would welcome comments for next time. The collection from the service was £183.10. Thank you to all who gave so generously. The grand total for this year: £ Box holders 323.94 Christingle 183.10 507.04 The work of the Society now covers many areas where children in the country face life’s harshest challenges – the homeless, refugees or asylum seekers, young people facing problems at school and caught in the cycle of crime and those living with disabilities. I have been the Parish Co-ordinator for ten years and would now like to hand over to someone else to continue to support this worthwhile charity. Pauline Partridge |
