Ordsall Parochial Church Council Annual Report 2006-2007 ELECTORAL ROLLThe Electoral Roll has been wholly revised this year. A full report will be presented to the meeting. Tony Weeds, Electoral Roll Secretary [Top] PCC SECRETARY’S REPORTThe PCC has met eight times since the last General Meeting and attendance at meetings has averaged 62% of membership. During the year revised procedures have been introduced for a more structured way of dealing with PCC business and these seem to be working well. Regular items of business have been the proposed alterations to the Church, replacement of the damaged porch windows and the sale of St Albans church which has not yet been concluded. The PCC has decided that plans for a memorial garden should be abandoned because of concerns about possible maintenance difficulties and vandalism. It has been agreed to examine instead whether the land can be converted to a burial ground. With the loss of Paul Bagshaw to the parish now a sad prospect the PCC has also been giving attention to how church business will be dealt with during any period while his post is vacant. The only change to PCC membership has regrettably been the recent resignation of Hilly Bagshaw as Deanery Synod representative and ex-officio PCC member. Brian Harvey, PCC Secretary EVENTS COMMITTEE2006/07 has been a busy year for the Events committee. We have held a variety of events: ? The concert and supper during the flower festival - June ‘06 ? The Summer Garden Party - June ‘06 ? Two ‘Village Ventures’ performances; ‘Secrets, Lies & DIY’- spring ‘06 and John Kirkpatrick - autumn ‘06 ? A New Years ramble ? A pancake party and Beetle drive evening - Feb ‘07 Some of these events have appealed to larger numbers of participants than others but all them have been a success in the sense that those who got involved enjoyed them immensely and they have all added to the sense of community shared both within the church family and with the wider community in Ordsall. The Events committee is made up of a core group of a handful of people who can at times find themselves stretched rather too much. A glance at the list of events proves that June ‘06 was a such a time of intense activity, and we are trying to look at new approaches in order to spread the workload more evenly. The committee appreciate the assistance given by all those who turn up and help at our events, be that erecting gazebos or cooking dozens of pancakes! But the driving force of the committee remains Peter & Shirley Thomas, thanks must go to them for all their hard work in enriching the life of Ordsall Parish. Long may they continue!New members are always welcome, as are suggestions and ideas for further events & activities. Helen Richards, Events Co-ordinator [Top] PARISH MAGAZINEThere has been a small but welcome increase in the number of regular and occasional contributors which gives more variety to the contents and makes the Editors lives easier. Recently following a comment the content has shifted to focus more on Ordsall. Circulation remains about the same but we could do with one or two more distributors as those who do this cannot always be expected to continue for ever. More housing in the parish is always being planned which gives scope for additional sales. A volunteer or two who could distribute a few magazines each month would be welcome. Financially the magazine continues to make a modest profit and the number of advertisers has held steady. Peter and Shirley Thomas, Editors WWW.ORDSALLPARISH.PLUS.COMThe parish website has been neglected during this past year and some pages have become out of date. It is to be hoped that this will soon be remedied. Paul Bagshaw FAMILY
CARE
Family Care provides: · Over the last year Family Care ran 20 group sessions for adopters, their families and supporters. · Expert support is available for children who have experienced a family bereavement or domestic violence. · Family Care works and supports families going through social isolation or parenting struggles. The Christmas Toy appeal in December 2005 gave over 1900 children and young people, in the Nottinghamshire area, Christmas presents that they would not otherwise have received, so grateful thanks were received by Ordsall Parish from the Family Care staff. The appeal is so effective now; many Social Workers rely on people’s generosity. Early in January/February 2006, Family Care continued to support us in Ordsall Parish with the aftermath of the court case. The agency provided a Child Protection course for anyone in Ordsall Church. We also considered the way forward and reviewed our policies and procedures. Some individuals and families continued to access the ongoing invaluable support that is provided by Family Care staff and volunteers. Back in July 2006, the annual Women’s Offering Service and Garden Party was held in Southwell. Again this was very well supported throughout the diocese and this all helps to pay towards the running costs of the various projects that Family Care is involved in. In November 2006, the appeal was once again sent out for toys. Ordsall held its annual toy service. Once again my car was full to the brim with good quality toys and gifts. We also managed to re-home two bicycles via Family Care, travelling to Nottingham with the bikes on our cycle carrier. On our arrival at a church hall in Bilborough, Nottingham (which hosts the Family Care Toy Appeal) it appeared to be all locked up. The usual voices were heard in the distance. They had seen the bikes arriving. They shouted, “Come round to the church doors”, “We’ve had a break in and the windows have been vandalised in the hall”. Fortunately nothing was stolen as most gifts are distributed on the day it is received – it is like a military operation! All the pews in church were full of toys and gifts – teddy bears all lined up, sitting up straight, ready to listen to the sermon! 40 organisations donated toys which were collected by 48 organisations, including local community projects, health visitors, and refuges. These toys have been distributed to a total of 1816 children. Seriously, without everyone’s wonderful donations, many children and young people would have a worse Christmas than they deserve. Thank you once again for your invaluable support of Family Care during the past year. Hazel Newstead [Top] THE CHILDREN’S SOCIETYThe Christingle Service was held on Saturday December 9th. The children from the Saturday Club once again made Christingles and took part in the service. We were pleased to welcome parents and friends. The total collection including some late boxes was £107.80. I have made a poster of the Thank you cards sent by the Society. I opened boxes during October and November, the donations totalled £228.34. There are 14 box holders and I am most grateful for their continuing support and pleased that many have gift aided their giving. In 2006 the Children’s Society celebrated 125 years since the Society was founded by Edward Rudolf. There was a special service of Thanksgiving and re-dedication at Southwark Cathedral on September 9th. A programme was launched called “Safe and Sound”. A petition was made to 10 Downing Street for government help to fund safe accommodation for child runaways. Many youths who had been helped off the streets were part of the petition. Another recent launch is the “Big Bag Appeal”. When Society helpe4rs find young people sleeping out on the streets, they offer a “Big Bag” full of essentials for a runaway child. This first approach is followed up and many go to a local hostel where their problems can be addressed. If you would like to have a collecting box or more information please contact me.
